My Writing Space

Mandy Eve-Barnett: My writing space has morphed over the years and I think reflects my growing commitment to this creative art. Initially, it was one end of the dining table where I placed my laptop and a notebook. Gradually my writing paraphernalia grew and most of the dining table (mostly unused) became a permanent rather than temporary writing space. I longed for a study to call my own but there was no available spare space in our home. So, I would write trying to ignore the blast of the TV or go to my local library to enjoy a quieter space. I even wrote sitting on the sidelines as my son practiced or played football or my daughter went through her gymnastic routines. Anywhere can be a writing space for an author after all.

Year upon year my writing reference books, folders, published books, binders and more took over the dining area end of the open space living room. I bought a proper writing desk, and rearranged the space yet again, it was always in a state of flux.

I eventually got my study when my daughter moved out. It was formerly her bedroom and I revelled in it for some time. Able to shut the door on the TV noise was pure bliss. Subsequently, I moved into my current home and was able to set up my writing space in my large master bedroom. However, I also enjoy writing in the living room (no TV) beside the fireplace and a large window overlooking the lawn.
