Patti Shales Lefkos is a Canadian writer and journalist. She trained as a journalist after a career in education as a teacher, consultant, and Vancouver inner-city principal. Patti enjoys canoeing, backcountry skiing and trekking various parts of the world; Britain, Europe, Tibet, and Nepal. She embraces the culture and environment of wilderness areas.
Patti’s articles, profiles, columns, and travel stories have appeared in a range of Canadian and international publications; Globe and Mail, Macleans, the San Francisco Chronicle, Travelife.ca, Elevation Outdoors, Canadian Living, Okanagan Life, Profile Kingston, and Okanagan Woman magazines. She was part of the San Francisco Chronicle team that won the Lowell Thomas Award for the best newspaper travel section in 2014. Nepal One Day at a Time is the story of her first trekking trip on her own. This Himalayan adventure celebrates her creative non-fiction debut.
Nepal One Day at a Time is a registered non-profit in British Columbia, Canada, founded by Patti and her husband, Barry Hodgins, working in partnership with other organizations to help build a school in a village in Nepal.
“Our purpose is to advance education and relieve poverty in the developing world by acquiring school materials, books, equipment, and supplies of all kinds and donating them to schools; teaching computer skills to students and teachers; building and operating schools, and providing teachers, technicians, and other staff to schools as needed. We also address basic needs by providing food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and education to children and young people.”
